Educational Development

Quality education is vital in our effort to improve the economic structure of Haiti. The School of Hope has approximately 2,500 students enrolled per school year in Kindergarten through High School. The school is very highly ranked based on governmental test scores, and each child is taught the gospel on a daily basis.

At Mission of Hope, we seek to see Haiti change from within. With our education program, our goal is to provide the next generation of Haitians skills that will allow them to be self-sufficient and productive. By providing a Christ centered education, Mission of Hope can equip graduates to become the next leaders of their communities, ultimately bringing about long-term change.

Why Education?

  1. Literacy rates in Haiti for the general population were 45% in 2010.
  2. Unemployment is now 90% in Haiti and 80% of Haiti’s people live in abject poverty.
  3. Approximately 50% of rural children ages 6-11 will never go to school
  4. Most of Haiti’s independent schools fail to meet the minimum educational standards set by the Ministry of Education
  5. There are still over 17,000 children in Mission of Hope’s surrounding area that will never go to school, due jointly to lack of money and lack of schools.

School of Hope

The School of Hope provides quality education for children from Kindergarten through High School.  In October of 2010, an afternoon school was added, increasing our enrollment to approximately 2,50o students.  Each day, the students are provided with a full meal, and are taught with a Christian curriculum. The school is divided into three sections with three principals directing each section. The Kindergarten section has three levels with children beginning at 3 years old. The Elementary section has six grades and the High School has seven. At the end of grade 6, 9, 12, and 13 government exams are given. Each student must pass these difficult exams to continue their formal education.

In addition to attending class, twice each week the students go to Chapel, with worship led by the high school students. Students also have a library period each week in which they can visit the Mission’s new library to read books.

The School of Hope follows the moto of “Mwen Kapab” which means “I Can”. We strive to promote academic excellence. As a result, the School of Hope is one of the top performing schools in the nation. In fact, last year we had a 100% passing rate for the standardized government exams.

Christian Curriculum

The name of the curriculum is “I can…” In Haiti many people shrug their shoulders and say, “Mwen pa kapab” (I cannot). We want to change this mindset to the truth that in Jesus Christ I can do all things…I can (Mwen kapab) learn to read, write, do math, etc. I can become a child of God who can change my community because I have truth and light! - Joan Martineau
