UPDATE on Djouica
May 4, 2013
Dr. Noredia, our visiting Pediatrician, and our translator Etienne visited baby Djouica today and brought the aunt and baby a few more supplies. Djouica is doing better, her temperature is stable and she is more alert. Due to admissions to the Neonatal Unit, she now shares an isolette with TWO other babies! She is by far the smallest, but all babies fit in the isolette together. Djouica's mom showed up! She is much older than the aunt and the hospital has her pumping breast milk to give through the feeding tube. Dr. Noredia was pleased and hopeful, since the mom can now see that her baby has a chance to live. Only in God's miraculous "coincidences", today is Dr. Noredia's birthday. She shared with that she herself was a preemie, born just a little bigger than Djouica. She feels that her life was saved by some American missionaries that started a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in her birth town of Benin City, Nigeria. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the prayers!
Djouica St. Hilaire
May 3, 2013
We would appreciate your prayers today and in the weeks to come for little Djouica St. Hilaire. She arrived to the Clinic of Hope today with her young aunt because her mom had abandoned the 8 day old premature infant (born about 12 weeks early) and the baby hadn't had any milk in 2 days. This little infant had a very cold body temperature, slow heart-rate, low blood sugar, and was so weak that she could not suck. God placed our visiting Pediatrician, Dr. Noredia, in the Clinic this morning -- she recognized the infant's critical condition and immediately started treatment. In addition, Dr Noredia and our medical team were headed to St Nicholas Hospital in St Marc to visit with a Partners In Health pediatric contact, so we were able to take the small infant along and get her admitted into their "Neonatal Care Unit", where she will share an incubator with another infant! Djourica weighs 1 lb 10.5 ounces; she is small but wants to live! Pray that she will gain weight, fight off this infection, and grow to be strong and healthy. Also pray for the family, as the father died of cholera and the mom has not yet been located. We believe that God has a plan for little Djourica! It was no mistake that she made it to us this morning, and right before our trip.
