We encourage everyone to get a Hepatitis A and B vaccine before traveling to Haiti, as well as an up to date tetanus shot. We also recommend that each person bring an antibiotic such as Cipro and an anti-diarrheal medication, just in case. This can be prescribed by your doctor. Be sure to contact your doctor or local health department to find out more about these and other immunizations you may wish to receive.
We ask that everyone coming to Haiti take an anti-malaria medication such as chloroquine. Chloroquine should be taken 1 – 2 weeks prior to departure and weekly thereafter until 4 weeks after you return home. Consult your doctor before taking chloroquine if you are taking other medications or have a medical condition.
We recommend having a thorough physical examination before travelling to Haiti. If you take prescription medications, bring enough to last the entire trip. Trips to Haiti can be moderately stressful and sometimes more so. If you have a mental illness or a physical disability please let our staff know before your trip. If you have any special needs while in Haiti (medical condition, food allergies, or other special requirements) please let us know before your trip, and be sure to bring anything you will need with you.
Everyone should bring their own mini medical kit in their carry-on. Your kit should have chloroquine, any prescription medicines you are taking, Band-Aids, first-aid ointment, diarrhea medication, ibuprofen, insect-bite medication, and a prescription antibiotic such as Cipro.
